Mother blames security firm, others over school hall attack

11/11/2008 7:22 AM

The mother of an East St. Louis alternative school student is suing over the severe injuries sustained by her son during a hallway attack.

Germarion Douglas, mother of Cartavious Jackson, claims her son was attacked from behind on March 10 at an Alorton school operated by East St. Louis School District 189.

According to a complaint filed Nov. 5 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, student Cassanova Raper "took position behind plaintiff for the purpose of bashing plaintiff in the face with his fist."

Douglas claims her son's left jaw was crushed, and he also suffered head, teeth and tongue injuries. She claims he has incurred medical bills and has become permanently disfigured.

Defendants include KLM Loss Prevention, Inc., its owner Kim McAfee and employee Debra Thomas, the school district, Raper and an unknown juvenile.

KLM, which provides security at the school, is allegedly negligent for failing to prevent the attack.

McAfee is named as KLM's sole shareholder. According to the complaint, KLM is undercapitalized, maintains a negative balance in its corporate checking account at times, maintains no liability insurance and reserves no funds as self-insurance.

"…[I]t is proper for this Court to pierce the corporate veil and require Kim McAfee to appear personally herein and to answer for the alleged negligence of his alter ego, KLM Loss Prevention, Inc.," the complaint states.

Jackson is represented by Rhonda D. Fiss of Belleville. She is seeking a judgment in excess of $300,000.
