Couple sues nine corporations over husband's asbestos exposure

8/20/2008 6:30 AM

A Schaumburg Ill., man recently diagnosed with mesothelioma filed an asbestos suit against nine defendant corporations alleging his disease was wrongfully caused.

Represented by Randy Gori and Barry Julian of Gori, Julian & Associates, Thomas Sowers claims he was diagnosed with mesothelioma May 16.

According to Sowers, from 1967 to 1973 he was in the U.S. Navy, where he trained to be a machinist and worked in the engine and boiler rooms.

He was also employed 1973 to 1983 as a laborer Stone & Webster Engineering Corp., and as a supervisor at Virginia Electronic & Power from 1983 to 2003.

Sowers claims his exposure to asbestos was completely foreseeable and should have been anticipated by the defendants.

He claims his illness caused him to become disabled and disfigured, experience great physical pain and mental anguish, medical expenses and lost wages.

His wife, Jan Sowers, is also seeking damages, alleging she has been deprived of Thomas' companionship, society and services.

The Sowers are seeking compensatory damages in excess of $250,000, plus punitive damages in an amount sufficient enough to punish the defendants for their conduct.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Court Judge Daniel Stack.
