Former Olin employee files retaliatory discharge suit

6/11/2008 2:00 AM

Deborah Coffman filed a retaliatory discharge complaint against Olin Brass in Madison County Circuit Court June 2, alleging she was fired after filing for workers' compensation benefits.

Coffman claims that on June 23, 2003, she sustained accidental injuries while working at Olin. She filed a claim for benefits in the Illinois Industrial Commission on June 25, 2004.

"On or about June 14, 2006, Defendant did willfully, wantonly, maliciously, recklessly, and intentionally discharge the Plaintiff in retaliation for the Plaintiff's accidental injury and the filing of her statutory right to claim workers compensation benefits contrary to the provisions of the Illinois Compiled Statutes," the complaint states.

Coffman claims her discharge has damaged her in excess of $50,000 in wages and benefits she would have earned and for the inconvenience and mental anguish her discharge has caused.

Represented by Kristen Wadiak of Glen Carbon, Coffman is seeking compensatory damages in excess of $50,000 and exemplary damages in excess of $50,000.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian.
