Family of truck driver electrocuted by power line files suit

5/15/2008 10:37 AM

The family of a man electrocuted in his tractor-trailer while delivering cattle feed to Reno Farms near Medora, Ill. has filed a wrongful death suit in Madison County Circuit Court.

According to the complaint filed May 13, Bruce Johnson, while operating his rig, made contact with an MJM Electric Cooperative power line causing him to be electrocuted on Sept. 12, 2007.

Represented by Bruce Cook of Belleville, Johnson's estate claims MJM committed the following negligent acts:

  • Failed to properly maintain its power line when it knew or should have known about the hazards;

  • Failed to properly maintain its reclosures protecting the power lines;

  • Failed to warn Johnson of the presence of the power lines; and

  • Failed to suspend its power lines at the proper height, when it knew or should have known about hazards.

    The estate claims Johnson's death caused his next of kin to lose the value of his society, companionship, support, love and affection in an amount in excess of $50,000.

    The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian.
