Asbestos

In 2003, 953 new asbestos suits were filed in Madison County, up from 809 in 2002 and 889 in 2001.

In March 2003, a Madison County jury awarded $250 million (including $200 million in punitive damages) to retired Gary, Indiana steelworker Roby Whittington who claimed U.S. Steel exposed him to asbestos that caused his lung cancer.
